Nowadays, the conflict between social strata in Korea is on the increase. Nevertheless, this conflict is of little interest for the most Korean theologians. They concentrate their efforts upon the theological reflection on the religious conflict among social conflicts in Korea. The current trend of the Korean theology is basically caused by the stagnation of the minjung theology. In the face of this theological situation, this study has two purposes: First, this study aims to prove that the religious conflict is not one of the primary social conflicts in Korea. In order to achieve the goal, this study applies the social scientific perspective of Herald Mu¨ller, J. Milton Yinger, and James S. Coleman to the present Korean society. As a result of the application, the religious conflict should be regarded as a secondary social conflict in Korea because the conflict between religious groups can not develop as an encounter between them and the society is already secularized. The second purpose of this study purposes is to demonstrate that the conflict between social strata is an essential social conflict in Korea. In order to achieve the goal, this study analyzes economically the distribution of income and property in Korea. The analysis shows that the structure of the distribution of income and property is growing more polarized, which deepens the conflict between social strata. The conflict becomes one of the most important social conflicts in Korea due to the consequences it can cause, as well as its current growth. The Korean theology should give a serious consideration to these social scientific results. However, this assertion never implies that no theological reflections on the religious conflict is worthwhile because they can contribute to spreading the religious tolerance throughout the society. Therefore, the Korean theologians should develop not only the religious theology, but also the socioeconomic theology.
