The purpose of this article is to examine Bokum Chan Mi and Malcolm C. Fenwick(1865-1935), an expert hymn writer and a missionary in the early Korean Baptist Church. As a writer of hymn text, a composer, and a missionary, his contribution to hymnody is significant in the early Korean hymnody. For instance, the effective premise in his contribution is that any labor within the service of Jesus Christ must be found on His principles, the principles of vernacular hymn texts. Malcolm Fenwick published several hymn books, Bokum Chan Mi (Wonsan, Korea, 1904, 1925, 1931, 1939) and several other books. The textural analysis of his hymn texts and tunes is suggestive for those who need to study his texts on the hymn, which provides significant theological characteristics on the texts. In this article, first, the present writer provide a biographical sketch of Malcolm Fenwick`s life and major contributions to early Korean hymn. Second, the present writer explore Fenwick`s theological viewpoint on hymnody, and his characteristic of texts. Fenwick`s characteristics of hymn texts are divided 3 categories as the instrument for service to God in so many ways, texts for expression, texts for education, and texts for mission. A hymn is an opportunity for a congregation to declare its experience and to rejoice in Christian doctrine corporately. Hymn texts should be true to Scripture and to the testimony of the Holy Spirit Fenwick believed that hymns is good instrument to communicate to God and unbeliever. So, he wrote many hymns in Korea. The number of all the texts that Fenwick composed is 41 in Bokum Chan Mi(1985). He wrote hymns of instruction, hymns of challenge, hymns of testimony and of great longing. Bokum Chan Mi differs from the traditional hymns in the text because Fenwick had a specific concept about the hymnody. He thought that if in Bokum Chan Mi of praise unto Him who loved us, washed us from our sins in His own blood, and still loves us, is found any of man`s doing(religion) for God`s(the Gospel), that also will be cut out and destroyed. Or, if there be found in it any praise of man, it will be demolished. Bokum Chan Mi is the hymnal of great value for in this points. In conclusion, Fenwick`s textual points of view are analyzed with the another several early Korean Hymnals, Chan Mi Ka(1905), Chan Song Ka(1980), Sin Jung Chan Song Ka(1931), and Hab Dong Chan Song Ka(1949).
