Revision of a hymnal begins with a desire to update and renew a hymnal in conformation to change of the Church. In other words, revision begins with redefining the nature and the purpose of the hymnal according to the historical context of the Church, The nature and the purpose of the [Gaepyun Chansongka](Revised Hymnal)(1967) was to provide a hymnal which is new and true aid to worship for Korean protestant churches in the twentieth century.
Three major protestant denominations using the [Hapdong Chansongka](the United Hymnal)(1949) cooperated in the compiling the [Gaepyun Chansongka](1967) which was both new and very revolutionary.
The contents of the [Gaepyun Chansongka] complement deficient areas in contemporary worship hymns and hymns according to the church calendar. The [Gaepyun Chansongka] retained the 391 traditional core of hymns (212 hymns and 179 gospel songs) from the [Hapdong Chansongka](1949), but many of these hymns have undergone updating of language. With newly added 220 hymns from German chorales and contemporary American and English hymns, the [Gaepyun Chansongka] encompasses a far wider range of material-both texts and tunes-than ever before in Korean hymnody.
The most creative effort of the [Gaepyun Chansongka] was to include 27 original hymn tunes composed by contemporary Korean composers which was the result of attempting for inculturation of Korean hymns.
The scholarly influence of revision committee consisting of 36 theologians, liturgist, church musicians, and poets made the [Gaepyun Chansongka] significant not only for the literary quality of its hymns, but also for the character of its tunes.
The successful achievement of eight principles for revision stated in the preface of the [Gaepyun Chansongka](1967) was reflected in the contents of this hymnal, making this hymnal a notable contribution to the twentieth century Korean hymnody.
But when the [Tongil Chansongka](1983) was published as a unification hymnal of all Protestant churches in Korea, many of the new hymns of the [Gaepyun Chansongka](1967) were not included and finally buried in the Korean hymnal.
The writer of this research studied the revision process and the contents of the [Gaepyun Chansongka](1967) and proved their creative contributions to the Korean hymnody.
