This paper aims to investigate the Russian internet space to examine whether the internet can contribute to democratization in Russia. The internet space can attain one of the two contradicting attributes, either public sphere or echo chamber. The public sphere means the space, where politically different groups gather and debate together, while the echo chamber is the place, where like-minded members from a single group reinforce their beliefs through exclusively mutual communication. This paper used these two concepts for analyzing the Russian internet.
The result of the analysis showed that the Russian internet has rather the attribute of public sphere than that of echo chamber. The existence of diverse political groups in internet space, their active cross-discussion, and their cooperation in political mobilization for off-line campaigns support the argument for the public sphere of Russian internet. This finding gives us a hope that the development of internet in Russia can fill the democracy gap and contribute to democratization.
