The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends in precedent studies conducted by academic journals on Kumdo. In comprehensively drawing on the results of the study, they are as following in these. First, as a result of analyzing the trends in 21 precedent studies on Kumdo that were published in “the Journal of Korean Alliance of Martial Arts Journal”, it was found that studies were conducted in four academic fields, including history of physical education, sports philosophy, sports psychology and sports management, and theses in the humanities and social sciences field made up the majority of studies than compared to those in the natural sciences field. In particular, among the 21 theses on Kumdo, 11 were on the history of physical education which comprised a majority of the 21 theses. Based on such findings, it was found that studies on Kumdo is in the stages of building an academic base founded on top of humanities studies from a perspective of historical philosophy. Second, as a result of analyzing the trends in 53 precedent studies on Kumdo that were published in “the Korean Journal of Kumdo”, academic fields were divided into four categories of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and others. With respect to the detailed academic fields, 12 theses were published in three specific subjects of history of physical education, sports philosophy and sports pedagogics from humanities. From social sciences, 28 theses were published in three specific subjects of sports sociology, sports psychology and sports management. In natural sciences, 11 theses were published in four specific subjects of exercise psychology, sports biomechanics, measurement evaluation and sports archival study. Two theses were categorized under the others” category. Based on such findings, it was found that many theses based on social sciences were published in academic journals on Kumdo by focusing on real life practicalities. Third, through the analysis on research trends in academic journals on Kumdo, research directions for academic advancement can be proposed as follows. Foremost, the continued publication of academic journals on Kumdo is required for the progress of Kumdo studies. Next, the establishment of an academic database regarding the field of Kumdo is necessary. Lastly, to ensure the academic unity and scholarship in Kumdo studies, it will be necessary to jointly work on the creation of a Kumdo dictionary, development of Kumdo study materials and a Kumdo research manual. The importance of this study is to propose a guideline for the direction in future academic research through the analysis on the research trends of academic journals on Kumdo. In addition, this study will serve as the aggregation of foundational materials that could contribute to the academic development of Kumdo.
