The purpose of this study was to identify the positive aspects of sports participation in relation with the development of leadership by examining the relationship between the pattern of sports participation and the leadership of university students. 320 university students (160 malea and 160 females) in Taegu and Kyungpook province served as the subject of this study. Subjects filled out a questionnaire composed of 11 items asking the pattern of sports participation and 30 items of leadership measures. Differences in leadership by the pattern of sports participation were analyzed by two-way ANOVAS, using gender and each of the sports participation variables as the independent variables. The result of the analysis indicated that those who participation in sports regularly had higher leadership than those who did not. Among the regular participation, leadership was found to be higher as the participation period got longer. Those who participated in group showed higher leadership than those who participation alone. Those who were present of past member of a sports club showed higher leadership than those who were not, Among those who were member of a sports club, those who served as an executive showed higher leadership. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that sports participation can have positive relations with the development of leadership. However, the relationship between sports participation and leadership can also be affected by the participation period, activity pattern(s), membership experience, and experience as an executive of a sports club.
