The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of application of leisure concept to historical sociology. When people are surveyed and asked to define leisure, the response most often used is some from of free time, time to do as you please. This deceptively simple question has a variety of conflicting answers because scholars of different orientations have attached all manner of philosophical, sociological, and psychological qualifications to the word. In this classical perspective, leisure is the cultivation of mind, spirit, and character. Leisure is a state or condition, an attitude, or a habit of the individual; and although it of occurs in thim, free time is not the essence of leisure. The leisure enjoyed by a few Greeks was based on the enslavement of large number of people. The leisure of the Christian ear until the 14C was a comparatively simple leisure, characterized by prayer and contemplation, and by festival holy days, which eventually becoame holidays. The Renaissance of the 16C was a golden age of leisure, but only for the nobility. The industrial era that began in the 18C produced the most work-oriented society the world has yet known. Leisure means time for oneself and is really independent of finances and economic exigencies. Leisure means delight, it means sensitivity to the beauty and wonder of existence and to the potential splendor of the human personality. Leisure is a personal matter, but society encourages or discourages leisure behavior both by the way the society rules itself and by the communication of values within that society.
