In June, 2014, one anonymous building on the Sinmunro Street, was suddenly demolished for the purpose of redevelopment of the adjunct building. The building was built in a form of typical commercial building in the cities of Korea in the early 20th century, two-story Hanok. With the unknown history- built by whom and when-, the building was rarely recognized though it has played its own role in the city for over 80 years. Likewise, a few of these old "anonymous buildings" still exist in Seoul and other cities in Korea.
These ‘anonymous buildings’ built in the first half of the 20th century are categorized into three: two-story Hanok, modern Hanok and Jeoksan house (house of the former enemy(Japan)). Two-story Hanok was a typical commercial building structured in wood or masonry. Modern Hanok was found in every corner of the city, particularly in Seoul, and even up to now, some are being kept well in Bukchon area in Seoul. As for the Jeoksan house, many of the houses built before 1940s still remain as urban artifacts in the cities. Yet, due to their unpleasant background, built and occupied by Japanese, the houses were not welcomed by people. (Jeoksan is not even an architectural term, rather it means the estate of enemy). Some of Jeoksan houses are preserved in some areas, but there is no structured plan for the protection of the houses.
Recently, some of Jeoksan houses and modern Hanoks have been renovated and transformed into modern cafes, shops, galleries, guest houses and so on. Recognized its cultural values, old anonymous buildings are being regarded as a valuable urban artifact. However, most of these houses are situated in a danger of demolition. Old anonymous buildings still function as part of the urban life. Moreover, diverse types of anonymous buildings show dynamic changes and history of mundane architecture in Korea. Now is the time to rediscover the true values of these ‘anonymous buildings’ and to take a step forward to revitalize them.
