Woljeongsa Tabdori is a typical Korean Tabdori(walking around tower) with a clear record that it was carried out in 1977. This study attempts to make the culture-philosophical examination for the Woljeongsa Tabdori.
For this, Chapter II summarizes the Indian traditional culture which becomes the background of Buddhist Tabdori, along with its acceptance by Buddhism and its change. Here the establishment time of Buddha"s tower(佛塔), the center of Buddhist tower, is closely examined, showing that the origin of Tabdori goes back till Buddha"s life time. It is very significant in that it tracked down the origin of Buddhist Tabdori. Based on this approach, this study deals with the change of tower in relation with the introduction of Buddhism into China as well as the change and development of Tabdori culture. It can give us a better understanding of the characteristics of East Asian towers and the Yeondeong(燃燈, candle lantern) Tabdori which means Byeogsa(?邪, evil-blocking). Next, Chapter III examines the viewpoint of Huaeom(華嚴) Idea related with Woljeongsa Tabdori. Present Woljeongsa Tabdori is the "Beobgyedo(法界圖)" Yeondeong Tabdori. That is, the Tabdori was added with a culture-philosophical aspect of Beobgyedo(法界圖) in Euisang Huaeom(義湘華嚴). Therefore, it is very important to reveal its philosophical meaning and its relation with Woljeongsa for an accurate understanding of Woljeongsa Tabdori.
