Chance and coincidence are integral aesthetics of Tacita Dean`s photography book Floh. The found photographs collected from various flea markets constitute this book. They are anonymous photograhps, typically shot to capture moments of everyday life for personal use. However Dean used them as a new artistic medium, situating them in a totally different context from where previously they had been. This dissertation aims to clarify the nature of the book. It examines the particular aspects of the found photographs in terms of a Andre Breton`s concept of “objective chance”, posing questions about how this book itself is a flea market that self ?reflects on itself via characters of the found photographs. In order to find answers, this dissertation explores three main themes.
One is Breton`s “chance encounter”, which Deans adopts as her working method in making Floh. The second theme is the found photographs themselves, marked by traces of unexpected chance occurrences such as technical errors, serendipitous encounters and strange coincidences. These images proliferate throughout Floh and increase the very randomness of the book. The last one is the character of the analogue medium. Drawing attention to traces, doubling and indexicality, Dean emphasizes the analogue medium`s utter openness towards the world and chance, by which she transforms the obsolete medium into a new artistic medium. These are the critical implications that run through Floh on the basis of the logic of rare chance, by which Floh offers the viewer diverse moments of coincidence that would correspond to the viewers` fantasies, imagination and desires.
