Russian has a fully productive system of four verbal participles, also known as "verbal adjectives." This paper offers an analysis of the participle system, resting on several crucial points. First, in the syntax, participial relative clauses must incorporate a full clause, lacking on the subject position. Two possible analyses are offered, and the one in the framework of Autolexical Syntax is selected as more suitable for the Russian facts. It is argued that derivation of participles must take place in the syntax, and not in the lexicon, because of the verbal syntactic properties that participles retain (e.g., the ability to assign Accusative and Dative case, etc.). It is further argued that phrasal input to derivational morphology must be accepted in Russian beyond the participial system. Second, the morphology of the participial system reveals that only the Past Active Participle hosts a full opposition between perfective and imperfective aspect, although there are partial aspectual oppositions in other forms as well.
This morphological fact provides the key to understanding the third and most important issue raised in the paper: the semantics of participial verb forms. Despite the names of the participles, which in Russian refer to tense, they express not tense but taxis (sometimes called "relative tense"). Aspect interacts with taxis to generate the temporal relation between a participle in an embedded participial phrase and the verb in the matrix clause. Perfective verbal participles express anterior taxis, while imperfective verbal participles generally express simultaneous taxis.
