This study is a diachronic review of the entrepreneurial activtiies of Paik Nak seung(the father of the late world famous video artist Paik Nam jun) who managed Japan Coal and Iron Co., Ltd. by taking advantage of imperialist Japan’s military mobilization policy during the Asia Pacific War and formed Korea’s first conglomerate, Taechang, in a close relationship with the Rhee Syngman administration after the country’s liberation from Japan. Previous studies have indicated that Korean capitalists cooperated with the wartime economy but failed to accumulate capital and, accordingly, could not help withdrawing earlier after their country’s liberation. However, with attention to Paik Nak seung’s entrepreneurial activities before and after the liberation, this study offers a new hypothesis that Paik succeeded in the accumulation of capital by providing cooperation with the wartime economy and pursuing business activities in a back scratching relationship with politicians even after liberation so that he could found Korea’s first conglomerate, Taechang. Furthermore, the study identifies the different experiences and diverse channels of Korean capitalists before and after liberation, comparing Paik’s entrepreneurial activities with those of the Gochang Kim, well known for the “Offspring of Empire”. In addition, the author comments on the current arguments of some historians who regard the wartime cooperation of Korean capitalists as collaboration with Japan.
