(Korean short version of Emotional and Personality-Related Career Decision Making Difficulties-28;
This study aimed to develop and validate the Korean short version of the Emotional and Personality-Related Career Decision Making Difficulties scale (EPCD), developed by Saka, Gati, and Kelly(2008), with Korean college students. First, we developed a 28-item, short version of the EPCD based on the results of exploratory factor analysis as well as theoretical validity. Unlike Sake et al.’s original assumption of an 11-factor structure, the 14-factor structure including three new factors was extracted in this study. Specifically, the pessimistic view factor was categorized by four sub-factors including ‘control’, ‘process’, ‘the world of work’, and ‘one’s career’. The anxiety factor was categorized by five sub-factors including ‘choice’, ‘process’, ‘outcome’, ‘uncertainty about the future’, and ‘uncertainty about one’s preference’. Lastly, the self-concept and identity factor was categorized by five sub-factors including ‘uncristallized identity’, ‘trait anxiety’, ‘approval-seeking’, ‘relational conflicts’, and ‘self-esteem’. The results of confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the factor structure of the short version adequately fitted the data from Korean college students. In addition, the concurrent validities of the Korean short version of Emotional and Personality-Related Career Decision Making Difficulties-28 items (K-EPCD-28) were verified by the results of correlational analysis with relevant variables (career indecision, depression, self-esteem, identity confusion).
