This article aims to analyze two poems by Shimazaki Toson . The first goal was to trace the influences of Western European literature on his work. Second, another goal was to identify the specific sources of this influence. To conduct this analysis, two of Toson’s early poems, “The Song of Autumn Wind” and “The Sound of Tide,” were selected in order to compare their themes and structure, and to analyze the distinct relationship between the modern way of thinking in human living in the nature and the way of the creative imaginary expression during the Japanese Meiji period .
The comparison shows that in Toson’s two poems, the common point of view on the life in the nature turned into the natural Japanese beyond the limit of the characteristics of the emotional Japanese language .
All things considered, Toson is more of a writer than a critic or a theoretician, and he utilizes and exploits aggressively in order to diffuse Japanese vocabulary and culture in Japanese society, adapting and modifying Western European literature to do so.
