This study is ethnography of ordinary North Korean defectors in the research area where researcher is living. Especially, this study observes community movements in the area and describes the participating people. The research covers how inner boundary of living community of defectors is made, how to pass the boundary, and what kinds of aspect do the defector community and the local community have toward building and passing boundary.
According to the research result, the boundary of the defectors turned out to be very diverse in ideological and behavioral aspect even though it has existed for physical spatial boundary as same as internal and external are of group habitat. Active boundary building has been processed according to hometown in North Korea, origin, reason and route of escaping, and education in Hanawon. For instance, escaping route and motivation for education in Hanawon were more important factor for building boundary rather than regionalism and school relations. In addition, the defectors put boundary toward another ‘multicultural people’ with different backgrounds such as Sakhalin returnee, immigrant factory worker, and married immigrant woman. However, ‘boundary passing’ has been observed. For example, the defectors create volunteer community themselves. This community collects monthly fund-raising and helps arrangement of environment and the elders in a senior-citizen center in the living area even if it does not receive any support from local organization. Moreover, people in the community also do these services over the living area while forming their identity and growing themselves as Korean citizen.

이 연구는 연구자의 거주지에서 일상적으로 만나는 북한이탈주민에 대한 문화기술지적 연구이다. 연구자는 인천광역시 논현동의 북한이탈주민 집단거주지에서 공동체 운동을 관찰하고 여기에 참여하고 있는 사람들을 인터뷰하였다. 특히 북한이탈주민들의 생활공동체 내부에서 경계는 어떻게 만들어지며, 그들은 경계를 어떻게 넘고 있는가, 나아가 북한이탈주민 공동체와 해당 지역사회에서 이와 같은 경계 짓기와 경계 넘기는 어떤 양상으로 나타나는가를 살펴보았다.
연구 결과 북한이탈주민에게 경계는 집단거주지역 내외부와 같은 물리적 공간적 경계로서 존재하고 있었지만 관념적, 행태적 경계는 매우 다양하게 나타났다. 이들 공동체 내부에서도 탈북 이전의 북한의 고향, 출신 성분, 북한 이탈 동기, 북한 이탈경로, 하나원 교육 등을 통해서도 경계 짓기가 이루어진 점을 발견할 수 있다. 특히 북한 이탈 경로, 하나원 교육 동기 등의 이유가 고향과 같은 지연, 학연보다 더욱 활발한 경계 짓기의 요인으로 작동하고 있었다. 또한 인천 논현동 지역의 다른 배경을 지닌 ‘다문화인’으로 간주되는 사할린 귀국 교포, 공단 이주노동자, 논현동 지역의 결혼이주여성들에 대해서 역시 경계 짓기를 하고 있었다. 그렇지만 이런 경계 짓기와는 대조적으로 ‘경계 넘기’의 행위도 관찰할 수 있었다. 이를 테면, 북한이탈주민들이 자립적으로 구성한 봉사활동 단체가 바로 그것이다. 이 단체는 구청이나 지역시민단체들의 도움을 전혀 받지 않고 북한이탈주민 스스로 월정액을 모금하고 이를 활동의 발판으로 삼아 거주지역의 환경 정비, 거주지역내 노인정에서의 봉사활동 등을 수행하고 있었다. 또한 이를 넘어서 거주지역 밖의 논현동 일대 도로 미화활동, 공원 등에 대한 환경 정화, 인근 아파트 단지 노인정 방문 등 봉사활동을 행하는 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 이를 통해 그 들 공동체 구성원들 간의 정체성을 형성해 나가면서 대한민국의 시민으로서 성장하는 모습을 기록할 수 있었다.
