The aim of this study is to investigate how the tourism activities in Korean national parks affect national environments. In 1996, there were already 24 million tourists who visited national parks throughout Korea except the one of Kyungjoo. Due to this situation, it has a long time since an environmental issue, in accordance with the preservation of sceneries and an ecological world, has socially become a prominent issue, despite the professional and continuous management for preparing and expanding the tour facilities under the Control Authority of National Parks. The economic effects of the tourism industry have widely recognized. It has not been proved yet, however, how much tourism affect a negative influence toward the natural environmental elements such as plants, water, air pollution, wild animals, mountains and coasts. According to this study, the officers at Control Authority of National Parks have shown a negative response as a bad effect by tourism: 55.7% for `special plants` within national parks, 54.6% for `mountains and water`, 52.3% for `wild animals` and 40.6% for `air pollution`. These effects present the fact that the natural environment within national parks has had a negative effect by tourism. The tourism-related authorities, therefore, need (1) to investigate the effects continuously on the construction of the tourism facilities and the tour activities by tourists within national parks, and (2) to make further efforts than they have done before in order to harmonize preservation and protection of the natural environment with development and growth of it.
