The purpose of this study was to investigate the incremental responses of body acidosis and ACTH of middle·long distance runners during acute exhaustive endurance exercise. Subjects were some commercial woman high school track and field athletes(n=12). Their major was middle·long distance running. They were applied by a modified Bruce Protocol which was consisted of 6 minutes per each stage. Blood sampling was made during rest, all-out, recovery 30 minutes and 60 minutes. The analysis items were serum pH and cortisol. The results of this study were as follows; First, the body acidosis of middle·long distance runners at rest was lower than pH 7.4. Second, when the exhaustive endurance exercise was applied to middle·long distance runners of track and field, the body acidosis was elevated significantly(p$lt;.01), but the body acidosis was still lower than pH 7.4. Third, when the exhaustive endurance exercise was applied to middle·long distance runners of track and field, the level of cortisol was elevated significantly(p$lt;.0001), and the elevation degree was the most higher at recovery 30 minutes. Fourth, the level of cortisol at recovery 60 minutes was lower than the level of recovery 30 minutes(p$lt;.0001), but the cortisol level of recovery 60 minutes and all-out was similar. From these results, I discovered the fact that the body acidosis of middle·long distance runners of track and field during exhaustive endurance exercise was lower than pH 7.4, so I suggested that middle·long distance runners has some remunerative terms of energy metabolism. Also, the cortisol response to an acute exhaustive endurance exercise at recovery 30 minutes was more sensitive than at all-out condition. This indicates the fact that the energy supplement metabolism through gluconeogenesis and fatty acid mobilization from adipose tissue was most brisk at recovery 30 minutes, and that at recovery 60 minutes such metabolism was on recovery to the rest phase. Therefore, I found that trained middle·long distance runners through long term regular endurance exercise could favorably adjusted their body acidosis and cortisol to endurance exercise.
