It is known that Confucius made a lot of efforts for the task of emendation and compilation as well as interpretation of canonical texts with “Six Classics” at the center of them. This tradition of Confucius was succeeded by the Confucian school which eventually became the most influential school for learning, interpreting, and teaching the classics. For this reason, the study of classics has been holding the supreme position and value in the Confucian school. The disciples of Confucius during the Warring States period was also based on the unique interpretation of the classics they made. It ranges from the overall examination of canonical text to the specific interpretation of details, with different methodologies from metaphysical discussion to linguistic analysis such as characters and pronunciation. This shows us that there was a transitional period of their own in terms of the interpretation of the classics and the viewpoint of the explanation. It is presumed that the scholars in the Confucian school might also attempt to interpret classics through the structure of the characters as well. With the example of “Tsinghua bamboo slip,” this paper will examine some aspects of the classic interpretation based on the theory of the character structure in the Warring Stated period. We can see that most of the character configurations in the Warring States period were changed from the characters of Yin and Zhou dynasties. Again, the characters in Warring States period prepared the ground for the appearance of li (隸) calligraphy in Qin and Han dynasties. Although these “Shangshu” literatures still maintained the form of the original texts on the surface, the context of interpretation above was already being found in the explanation of the authors. The viewpoint of the authors can be divided into two layers of “tradition” and “explanation”. It belongs to the realm of “Shu (述)” to retain the original character structure and to use the interchangeability of the Western Zhou period. But it should belong to the realm of “Zuo (作)” to make special graphic forms (專造字). It is clearly shown that this kind of explanation based on the character structure is consistent with the interpretation of the Confucian school.
