This paper analyzes the Westminster Shorter Catechism Question 4 in terms of (i) lexical semantics, (ii) translation of terminology, (iii) interrelationships of attributes, and (iv) the distinction between incommunicable and communicable attributes. Arguably, one of the best definitions of God ever written by man, might be that given in the WSC. This article specifically focuses on two different versions of the Korean translation of “a Spirit” in the WSC Question 4, which are “신”(神, God, Deity) and “영”(靈, Spirit). There exists a subtle distinction in meaning between the two. The question of which one to embrace might depend on each individual’s judgment, yet I put forward that adopting the latter would be more reasonable. It is interesting to note that the two different translations of the WSC might have deprived from different interpretations of the Korean Bible. The Korean Old Version takes the term, “신”, while the Korean Revised Version selects “영”. Often, there is a tendency to maintain traditional manners and customs, but it is proper to follow sound hermeneutics in word selection in translation. Although there is no absolute answer to the question of how the attributes of God should be classified, there are clear benefits in the traditional Reformed method of distinguishing the attributes of God based on those which are communicable and those which are incommunicable. It helps keep us from the errors of Pantheism, as well as Deism. Without being speculative and technical, the WSC Question 4 shows the orderly interrelationships among the attributes, in full agreement with the common method used in the Reformed theological tradition. However, no method escapes the problem of human limitation and sin, and the WSC is no exception. Therefore, the above mentioned methods should be considered in a complementary manner for the peace and spiritual benefit of the church.
