Proverbs have been handed down through generations and are now worth as a product illustrating the lives, attitudes, values and cultures of people in a particular society. Environment-friendly lifestyles and wisdom of life lay in detail in proverbs. In order to understand and solve complex environmental problems of the modern society, it is necessary to have analogical thinking. Analogical thinking is involved in the process of interpreting and understanding connotative meanings in proverbs. Analogy is a cognitive process of transferring information or meaning from one particular source to the target problems. Analogical thinking is the fundamental strategy to solve problems. In this study, it was hypothesized that learning traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) through proverbs would enhance elementary school students" analogical thinking. For sixth-grade elementary school students in the experimental group, an opportunity to learn TEK in proverbs was provided. In contrast, for students in the control group, lessons without using proverbs were given. After that, they were required to solve the problems given which were in relation to the contents of the lesson but had not been covered directly. As a result, in the analogical thinking test, the mean difference between the two groups evinced statistically significant, which demonstrates that learning TEK by means of proverbs helps elementary school students improve analogical thinking. It also indicates that proverbs can be analogues for analogical transfer and, form the schema for solving target problems. TEK has been expressed in various ways in our lives and is also influential to our current life. Analogical thinking promotes problem solving skills of elementary school students who are to face complex and unpredictable environmental problems. For ecologically sound decision-making, it is necessary for students to develop analogical thinking skills to solve their own problems, as opposed to rote learning.
