Policy preference forms a necessary basis for the working of democratic politics, in which political parties play a central role. However, little research has been done to investigate whether Korean voters’ support for political parties is related to their policy preference. Using a recent survey data on the 19th National Assembly Election, this paper examines the influence of policy preference on the support for political parties. In doing so, we take into account not only voters’ policy preference but their perceptions about political parties’ stances on policy issues such as jobs, taxes, environment, and North Korea. The results show that policy preference significantly influences support for political parties independent of regionalism, ideology, age, and other standard controls. The policy preference also plays a significant role in determining whether voters become partisans or independents.
