Previous researches have regarded the late- or un-deciders, who do not choose where their votes go until the last moment of electoral campaign, as inattentive, uninformed, and inactive voters. Based on recent researches, however, this paper divides undeciders into active un-deciders and passive un-deciders and examines the effects of party preferences and campaign issues.
Empirical findings suggest as follows: First, while passive un-deciders are more found in women and young voters, active un-deciders are more likely to have higher education. Second, although party factor influences presence of un-deciders, its impact is more powerful on passive ones. Third, similar patterns are found in the effects of campaign issues that active un-deciders are relatively free from ambivalent attitude from cross-pressure, while passive undeciders hesitate to judge them.
Data are drawn from the survey among 1,500 respondents executed by YTN and Korean Association of Electral Studies.
