The media’s representation of reality provides us opportunities to reflect on new social phenomena. Korea is rapidly transforming into a multi-cultural society. We can examine general perceptions of the immigrants in Korean society by observing how the immigrants are depicted in popular Korean movies. The researchers studied the representation of immigrants in two popular Korean movies, <Banga?Banga!> and <The Punch>, to examine how immigrants are perceived in Korea.
The study concluded that <Banga?Banga!> presents the cultural sentiment and identities of the immigrants well, while <The Punch> failed to present the cultural aspects of immigrants in depth. For example, Diasporan sentiments, despite being depicted in a negative way, were well addressed in <Banga?Banga!>, whereas <The Punch> did not touch on this theme. In both movies, the immigrants were represented as a lower class people living in a harsh environment. Furthermore, both movies depicted the immigrants as independent and active social beings, as opposed to their characterizations in previous films as passive outsiders. Also, it is noteworthy that the two movies suggest the possibility of building a transnational community where immigrants and natives communicate actively and maintain mutual respect. The representation of immigrants in the two movies, therefore, proposes an alternative discourse on the immigrants in Korean society by avoiding previous characterizations of immigrants, thus suggesting the possibility of a more transnational community.
