Jeong Je-hyeong, a typical Euju merchant, was born in Yongcheon Pyeongbuk in 1886, and moved to Euju in his childhood. He studied in Yangsil School, a nationally prestigious school and graduated from the school, and passing through the teaching profession, he operated the mining industry for some time. But, the business to which he put so much work above all was ginseng trade. He went to Hong Kong or the South Seas and peddled ginseng there, showing the appearance of the Euju ginseng merchant.
After the Mach First Independence Movement in 1919, he went to Shanghai as an exile where the Korean Provisional Government was established. He was appointed a councilor of the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Provisional Government and was engaged in independence movement. Influenced by Ahn Chang-ho’s industry spirit to save the country, he also joined Young Korean Academy and worked for it. In accordance with Young Korean Academy’s strategy to advance into the Nanyang(South Sea), he quit the direct independence movement and returned to his natural way of merchant.
He advanced into Xiamen, a good harbor on the south eastern coast of China and operated Taebaeksan Ginseng Corporation there. In the early 1930s, he advanced into Hong Kong and established the branch of the ginseng corporation, and expanded his business. Jeong Je-hyeong’s Taebaksan Ginseng Corporation was utilized as the foothold and contact point of the independence movement. His ginseng corporation was crowded with the ginseng merchants coming and going to the Nanyang such as various places in China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
Jeong Je-hyeong, who became a wealthy person with a large amount of money through ginseng trade in the middle of 1930s, disposed of the ginseng corporation business after the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and spent the remainder of his life treating his sickly constitution which had been weak since his youth and ended his turbulent life in 1943.
