The purposes of this study are to propose method to apply the concept of ‘mental space’ in Korean language education. The mental space is the important concept in Cognitive Linguistics. It is a theoretic construct proposed by Gilles Fauconnier corresponding to possible worlds in Philosophy. It is a conceptual package which is constructed as we think and speak. A useful concept in Cognitive Linguistics will give also efficient methods of teaching Korean language. This paper is divided up into four chapters.
In chapter 1, the need for comprehension of complicated meaning and advance researches about teaching for native speakers have been addressed. And then it is reviewed that meaning construction is online processing. In chapter 2, the concept of mental space has been described. Plus, the background on it and the process of the mental space theory have been addressed. The finding is that there is still room for researching in terms of method to apply the mental space in Korean language education. In chapter 3, the focus of applying the mental space is on the meaning construction of compound words, meaning construction of discours. The examples that cause proactive activities of learners are focused on the middle school curriculum. In chapter 4, the summary includes the discussion and the expectation for a follow-up study.
