From an interactional perspective, conditionals are typically used in contexts where face-threatening is highly likely to occur, such as 〔demand〕 whereby the speaker wants to bring about change or manipulation of the addressee`s action. The reasons for recruiting conditionals in such contexts are due to the fact that characteristics of conditionals have to do with those of politeness. In naturally occurring discourses, conditionals are used in overwhelming proportion for polite requests, moderated expressions, offering alternatives, and issuing warnings, among others. These speech acts conform to the politeness principles in that they do not force the addressee to perform an action but open a possibility for alternatives for addressee`s options. In addition. 〔hypotheticality〕 feature of conditionals enables indirectness, a defining characteristic of politeness, through a movement along the mental space.
