Since the late 1990s，Korea entered the neo-liberal age, under the name of globalization, which brought a rapid transformation in the political，religious, cultural and the everyday life, let alone the economic field. Self-development or self-manipulation became the word on everybody’s lips. This phenomena was a product of neo-liberalism. The fever of self-development demanded the people to manipulate and cultivate effectively their own body as well as mind. As a result, the books which is related to the self-development became best-sellers or steady sellers. The business which is related to self-development, also, became prosperous.
The Korean protestant church is one of the community where the self-development discourses are produced and consumed in a rapid and wide way. Especially the protestant women tend to buy and read the books related to self-development. They play the major role in consuming the self-development discourse.
This paper attempted to explore the characteristics of the self-development discourses produced and consumed by the Korean protestant women. Also，this article tried to analyse the gendered images of the female subject which are produced by the self-development discourse. Finally the author examined the way which the church women problematize and manipulate themselves by the technology of gendered body.
