Ogy? Sorai(荻生?徠), a Tokugawa Confucian scholar, strongly criticized contemporary Japanese methods of understanding the Confucian classics as distorting the truth. Instead, he argued that scholars needed to read them in the original Chinese grammar instead of mechanically rearranging the original Chinese word order into the native Japanese grammar using the wakun system (和訓). His linguistic philosophical methodology culminated in his most famous works the Bend?(辨道) and the Benmei(辨名). Many scholars believe his ideas for these two works developed when Sorai was attached to Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu(柳澤吉保) when he supposedly came into contact with the works of It? Jinsai(伊藤仁) and the Ming Archaists Li Panlong(李攀) and Wang Shizhen (王世貞). However, I argue that the core of his ideas had already developed in his early 20s or earlier before his appointment to the Yanagisawa household, based on his earlier work the Yakubunsentei(譯文筌蹄). This article will trace back the historical circumstances of his intellectual development and locate these early seeds of his philosophic system.
