The motivation of this study was drawn from a question: Why did Choi Namsun travel mountain and stream and leave a record of them? In his eyes, the Korean peninsula seemed to be a space in which he was able to explore the history of Cho-sun as well as a national territory to build the spirit of the time right. In specific, this study focused on ‘a mountain’ as a space of realizing his intention. For example, Mt. Guemgang was like a holy being for him. Furthermore, it was a target or spirit of ‘a national belief’ for him. In addition, a meeting with Mt. Guemgang was a media which allowed Cho-sun people to recall ‘old lesson’. As such, a space of ‘a mountain’ was expressed as a huge community of ‘a nation’. Therefore, Choi’s travelling was characterized as something of nation, or something of Chosun’s value, expressed as a worship of a mountain. In addition, Choi’s plan was reflected on this record that the symbolic equality should be promoted to elevate Chosun’s value as world-class value. In conclusion, enlightenment and modernity which he had designed previously through planning it as ‘an ocean’ were moved into and projected in full as ‘a Continent’, especially as ‘a mountain.’
