『Mannyousyu』, the oldest collection of poems in Japan, was already translated into Korean during the Japanese colonial period. In the collection, the word ‘OHOKIMI(大君)’ was translated into ‘icon(聖上)’ by Seo Doo-soo and ‘sir(님)’ by Kim Ok. In other words, ‘OHOKIMI’ meant ‘icon’ or ‘sir’ during the Japanese colonial period. After national liberation, ‘OHOKIMI’ was translated by few translators. Interestingly, it was translated into neither ‘icon’ nor ‘sir.’ However, it wasn’t a matter of whether or not ‘icon’ or ‘sir’ was the right translation for ‘OHOKIMI,’ or if there was better translation for the word. In fact, both ‘icon’ and ‘sir’ weren’t used just because translators didn’t know that『Mannyousyu』had been translated by Seo Doo-soo and Kim Ok. Among them, for example, Lee Yeon-sook translated ‘OHOKIMI’ based on 『Mannyousyu』translated by Kim Sa-yeop. As stated above, this study has figured out why the early-stage translation for ‘OHOKIMI’ hasn’t been used through analysis on the history of the translation of ‘OHOKIMI’ in 『Mannyousyu』. As a result, it’s been unveiled that there was discontinuance in the translation history of 『Mannyousyu』.
