A speaker can signal the source of his/her knowledge in an utterance; evidentials are the linguistic means of indicating a speaker"s source of information. Selon X indicates that the speaker has borrowed the information that he/she communicates from the verbal source specified by the complement of the preposition.
This paper deals with the expressions selon + personal pronoun. The goal of the paper is to present their syntactic behaviour and semantic interpretation as evidential markers and to show certain conditions of their use. Selon lui and selon vous indicate hearsay evidence (polyphonie/diaphonie) wheras selon moi is an inferential evidential. An evidential study permits a detailed explication of their functioning.
