In the area of linguistic study, conditionals is a grammatical term to cover structural relation between if-clause and main clause which leads to the logical semantics of conditional. Based on the sentential analysis of conditionals, previous works has focused on the semantic analysis of conditional structure presented by if-clause as well as a main clause. Well-known conditional sentences express two different kinds of semantic relationships: real conditionals and unreal conditionals.
The present study examines conditional expressions in Japanese discourse. Specifically, it investigates the pragmatic functions that condition the alternation among four morphological manifestations of Japanese conditional markers: tara.
Pragmatic analysis deals very explicitly with linguistic environments which is not a main concern of semantic approach to linguistic forms. A certain linguistic forms are not kept intact, but changed a great deal depending on linguistic environments. They are concerned with people's intentions, assumptions, beliefs and interactional aspects of them. In a similar vein, the current study will explore the pragmatic nature of tara on the basis of the given linguistic environments.
