Language expresses what humans perceive in the real world, and distance-denoting words such as near and far are examples which encode our perception of space. This research examines meanings and usages of 'melta' far as one of distance-denoting words from a cognitive linguistic perspective through an analysis of Korean corpus data. Based on an examination of the distribution of meanings of ‘melta’ in the corpus, this study shows that ‘melta’ denotes not only physical distance but also metaphorically extended meanings. Examination shows that the meanings of 'rnelta' are classified in the following terms: (ⅰ) physical aloofness, (ⅱ) temporal remoteness, (ⅲ) distance in kinship/social relations, (ⅳ) remoteness from goals or abstract states/entities. Such semantic properties of ‘melta’ indicate that the meaning of ‘melta’ as physical remoteness is metaphorically extended to denote abstract relations between the reference point and the referent. This research characterizes abstract meanings of ‘melta’ by applying metaphor theory, showing that metaphorically extended meanings are derived from our concept that distance in temporal sequences, social relations, and abstract entities is viewed as distance between a reference point and a target on a linear line in human conception of the world. Finally, this research suggests that a corpus-based cognitive approach is a useful tool in characterizing metaphorically extended meanings of other space-denoting words. (Chung-Ang University)
