The Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) is one country with four main languages referred to as “national languages.” They include Kiswahili, Tchiluba, Kikongo and Kilingala. Of these, Kiswahili retains the largest population. However, much as the citizens would have liked to be seen as having African national languages, they have none. To this end, DRC remains linguistically fragmented, and it troubles the conscious minds to continue communicating through French, while longing for an African linguistic identity. Could Kiswahili be the language of their choice? The article addresses the Kiswahili language dynamics in the Congo with this question in mind. It gives a historical review of Kiswahili while tracing its strength from Lumumba’s 1959 meeting in Conakry Guinea through Mobutu (Joseph) Sese Seko to Laurent Kabila’s short lived rule. While today the DRC under Joseph Kabila is changing towards a linguistic unity, the paper mainly poses question worth considering for a meaningful and long lasting linguistic unity in the Congo. The hypothesis is that potentially Kiswahili stands a better chance that the other three main languages for such a linguistic unity. But then which Kiswahili language should the people of DRC choose as their identity? The paper concluded by calling for language experts and policy makers to look into the possibility of standardizing and institutionalizing the language for national unity.
