This study aims to examine subway carriages of six subway routes in Seoul Metropolitan area and find out whether the interior facility for users are designed conveniently and safely.
For this, this study conducted a survey using a checklist based on the current legal standards of facility installation of Korea and Japan. The survey findings were assessed according to the three-point Likert scale, and then focusing on the low point items, this study identified the problems of user facility of the Seoul Metropolitan area subway carriages. The assessment findings of the carriages via the checklist of total 41 items were as follows; with three points being the maximum score, B carriage scored 2.4 points, A carriage 2.6, D and E carriages 2.7, and C and F carriages 2.8 in order. The findings of assessment by facility showed that other facilities scored 2.3 points, general facility 2.7, and safety facility and information facility 2.8, with average of 2.7, which was assessed somewhat highly. The reason why B carriage was assessed lowest among the surveyed carriages with 2.4 points was because, in assessing other facilities, only B carriage did not have a TV installed which resulted in one point. The assessment findings of other facilities of other five carriages also showed rather low scores compared to the rest of the facilities, and the reason was because the connection of the installed IT equipment was not robust, which was assessed as two points. As for TV, which only assessed the presence of installation, it was installed in five carriages (A,C,D,E,F), resulting three point assessment. However, the broadcasting contents were not diverse and limited to the corporate promotion. Therefore, it was considered that this area needs improvement. For future studies, it is expected to extend the survey over the entire 14 routes of the Seoul Metropolitan subway and examine more comprehensive status.
