The single-stylobate stone pagodas refer to the pagodas that have the upper stylobates only to constitute the body parts without the bottom stylobates. The single-stylobate stone pagodas are about 24 and are mostly found in Gyeongsang-do. In case of those outside Gyoengju, they were usually built along the road from Gyoengju to other areas.
Compared to the double-stylobate stone pagodas, the single-stylobate stone pagodas have other differences than the absence of the bottom stylobates. First, they were built with a rule of construction on the stylobate that cannot be found in the double-stylobate stone pagodas. Second, to enhance the ascending sense, they built the base for the first story body separately, making the height of the body longer than its width in order to create the overall slim figure. Third, the free-styles in the stylobate can be explained by building a pagoda on a natural rock or on a high-rising earth. Fourth, they were mainly built in a single-story in a free layout free from the relationship with the main halls.
The background of the emergence of the single-stylobate stone pagodas was the perspective of the people at that time that a pagoda was a representation of the Sumeru, and it is presumed to have been highly related with the belief in Buddha"s Land in Silla. The establishment of spread of the single-stylobate stone pagodas after the ninth-century brought about the emergence of a new trend in pagoda building. At first, it became popular to make the whole rock as the stylobate and built a pagoda on the top of a mountain. It is also highly likely that the pagodas are deeply related with Mojeonseoktap(模塼石塔) of unique style that were built only in the Gyoengju area such as East Stone Pagoa in Namsan-dong, Gyoengju, and the three-story stone pagoda in Seoak-dong.
The single-stylobate stone pagodas in Silla Times stimulated a lot of single-stylobate pagodas in Goryeo Dynasty. Muilti-storied stone pagodas of Goryeo Dynasty is excel Silla"s single-stylobate stone pagodas in their number and are found throughout the country. They have not only high stylobates but also high bodies, preferring multiple-story pagodas of at least five stories. In this sense, it can be said that the single-stylobate stone pagodas in Silla Times contributed to the establishment of slimmer pagoda styles in Goryeo Dynasty.
The rapid spread of Silla stone art to the local areas along with the prosperity of Zen Buddhism after the ninth-century were concerned, to a large degree, not only with the changes in Silla times but also the new localization of stone art in Goryeo Dynasty. Since the effect of Silla single-story stone pagodas on the changes was substantial, it is expected that more examination of the relics and its subsequent confirmation of more Silla single-story stone pagodas will lead to more comprehensive research results.
