Certain instances of double relativization are possible in Korean, and one syntactic explanation for it is that they are derived from multiple subject constructions without violating the CNPC and that they thus do not pose a problem for the null operator movement analysis of relativization (Han and Kim 2004). Despite its merit of capturing the strong correlation in the acceptability of DRCs and their MSC counterparts, this account has many counterexamples and its explanatory power is limited in that it can explain only the DRCs in Korean. In this paper, I propose an account which does not suffer from the kind of problems a purely syntactic account like Han and Kim has but can still capture the strong correlation between DRCs and MSCs. In short, my claim is that such an account can be found if we take a processing approach to island effects.
