The penultimate paragraph of the Tractatus, which proclaims the nonsensicality of the propositions of the book itself, seems to be in tension with the last paragraph of the preface of the book, which asserts the ‘unassailable and definitive truth of the thoughts that are communicated’ in the book. This paper is an attempt to dissolve the apparent tension by providing a correct reading of the central thoughts of the Tractatus against the background of the current warlike debates about how to read the book. Basically, against the tendency to reduce the significance of the picture theory in the Tractatus, I explain the theory as being interconnected with the fundamental idea of the autonomy of logic, and as taking a significant and central role in Wittgenstein’s attempt to show the limits of language. I also show that, through his ladder of nonsensical pseudo-propositions, Wittgenstein, in Tractatus, tried to make us recognize that absolute, transcendental and value-related truths, which are to be seen only from the viewpoint of eternity and are different from the contingent and effable truths considered as the correspondence between pictures and the states of affairs, exist about this very real world,-not about any higher, transcendent world.
