The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the combined performance of walking exercise and Qi-gong by elderly people on the change of their blood lipids and physical fitness in an effort to step up the health promotion of the elderly. The subjects in this study were 45 elderly people, who were randomly divided into three groups. One was a group of 15 who got walking exercise, and another was a group of 15 who got Qi-gong. The third was a group of 15 who got both walking exercise and ei-gong. Each program was implemented during a 12-week period of time, five times a week. To grasp the general characteristics of the subjects, x2(Chi-square) test was carried out, and ANOVA was utilized to check the equivalence of the groups. And repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to determine each program"s effect on the blood lipids and physical fitness indicators of the elderly people. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the combined performance of walking and Qi-gong had an effective impact on the decrease of the elderly people"s total cholesterol and neutral fat and the increase of their HDL-C. Second, the combined performance of walking and Qi-gong exerted an effective influence on the improvement of the elderly people"s grip, flexibility and balance. Given the above-mentioned findings of the study, the combined performance of walking exercise and Qi-gong by elderly people is expected to serve as an effective senior health promotion program to affect the improvement of blood lipids and physical fitness in a positive way.
