Report Errors
By providing a description of M&A process of Korea Exchange Bank(KEB), this case stimulates active discussion about the difference between financial investors and strategic investors, and evaluates each M&A strategy. Due to insolvency of corporate finance, KEB was acquired by Commerzbank and Lone Star Fund in IMF crisis. After improving the performance of KEB, Lone Star Fund, as a financial investor, tried to sell KEB. Although Lone Star Fund failed the M&A negotiation with the Kookmin Bank and HSBC, Hana Financial Group finally acquired KEB in 2012. Hana Financial Group, as a strategic investor, expected various synergy effects such as aggressive overseas expansion, increasing domestic branches and strengthening credit card business. Hana Financial Group, however, had to solve several problems in order to succeed in post merger integration with KEB.
