This is a text that I delivered at the ‘2012 Sohn Pokee Memorial Lecture’, an annual event by the interdisciplinary journal Hyonsanggwa- Insik (The Korean Journal of Humanities and the Social Sciences) founded in 1977. By commemorating the academic spirit of Professor Sohn Pokee (1922-2010) that attempted to abolish the Japanese colonial view of history rooted in Korean society, I discuss how education has evolved from the Choseon society through the period of the Japanese seizure to today. At the closing years of the 19th century new religious movements provided an alternative way of living to the established social order. Most prominent was Protestant mission schools which provided a new base for cultivating civic engagement, challenging the old order educational system that aimed at attaining one’s social position within the dominant system. This was, however, thwarted when all the educational activities were strictly controlled by the Japanese colonial rule. After the liberation of Korea in 1945, education seemed to revive the civic tradition by nurturing democratic values through every level of education, and yet it was soon replaced by education for economic use ever since the coup d’etat in 1961 initiated the national mobilization for economic growth. It is the situation where functionaries are produced, which directly contrasted with the educational vision of nurturing civic minds promoted by the Protestant mission schools.
