This paper introduces studies of Southeast Asian History in Korea from 2008 to 2011 as a body of work. During this period, the field has achieved both quantitative and qualitative growth despite an unfavourable research environment. There were a total of 86 research papers tpublished in academic journals or books. In this regard, there are two aspects that need to be considered. Firstly, what are the major characteristics of the results of research in terms of their research area, themes and perspectives? Secondly, were there any changes in research focus?
In terms of research area, Vietnam had the largest number papers, but there was a fairly evenly distribution among other Southeast Asian countries. Research themes included: nationalism, colonialism, modernization, regionalism, political ideology, institutions, ethnic minorities, catholicism, artisans etc.
In addition to trying to adhere to their own area speciality, historians began to publish articles covering the entire Southeast Asian region. These works mentioning the region as a whole tended to be introductory works, a theme that was not popular in the past. This may be because senior scholars judged that regional history ties in with national history.
Moreover, there was a gradual shift in research focus from specific areas to neighboring regions. Recent increasing interest in Southeast Asia has run parallel with this wider context. In this situation, there have been papers covering influences of the outside world on Southeast Asia as well as the relationship between Korea and Southeast Asia. Taken as a whole, these characteristics show that the historians concerned tended to widen their perspective beyond their own boundaries.
