??The word, nuclear, that has been a hot issue in Korea as well as international society from the period of the liberation comes to play as a significant source of poetic imaginative stimulus. Those poets who took part in the work of 『contemporary temperature』, a post-war poetry, embodied, through varied metaphors, the skepticism on modern civilization, cruelty of reality, and the suppositive imagination of human annihilation.
??The nuclear discourse seems, at the very least, to have produced several significant phenomena onto the post-war poems. Firstly, the symbols such as ‘Einstein,’ and ‘ashes of death,’ etc. were born from the level of poetic expressions. The poets started to sing of antihuman attributes and horrors of icy-cold doctrine of science through a variety of rhetoric that alludes nuclear explosions. They who are from the post-war era do not describe the experience they underwent during the war in a way of realism, but carry the human calamities exposed to the extreme violation and insanity, in a way of surrealistic technique that depicts the nuclear explosions beyond imagination.
??Secondly, this particular subject of nuclear brings forth a unique post-wat modernism, intertwined with the limit of rational recognition and the post-war existential sensitivity frustrated in face of irrational actuality. The post-war poets, after the Korean Civil war, come to manifest the attitude of existentialism that emphasized that the uncertain situation should be dealt with by the influence of ‘choosing’ and something practical, yielding the limitations of ethics which led the modern society and of the historical prospects.
??Thirdly, the nuclear was a critical factor that detonated the concerns of poets in relation with the love for human and the value of life. The Korean civil war, which was nearly turned to an experimental spot of nuke, was inscribed as a new historical sign to poets, and they, glancing definitely at the words of life and humanity through the lens of nuclear, ultimately sublimate an individual’s poetic tune into a poetic concept for mankind.
