The object of this study is to compare the nature poems of Sowol Kim with those of William Wordsworth. Sowol and Wordsworth share some traits of Romantic Poetry in common, which are characterized by heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual’s expression of emotions and feelings, and rebellion against social rules and conventions, in spite of their differences in historical, periodical, and philosophical backgrounds. Both of them recognize a kind of mystery or spirituality in nature, which are called by “ecological spirituality” in this thesis, and also experience a sense of eternity through it.
Sowol’s shamanistic imagination and Wordsworth’s pantheistic imagination are somewhat similar in their pursuit of ecological spirituality in nature. There are, however, very important differences in their pursuit of ultimate union with an eternal and transcendental Being. Sowol is often disillusioned and frustrated by his self recognition of tragic human condition. On the other hand, Wordsworth ultimately experiences a victory of divine human mind, which is identified with a poetic self of the poet himself, over the spirituality of nature. This thesis, I think, is a meaningful trial in that it is a first comparative study of Sowol Kim and William Wordsworth.
