One of the chracteristics of English romanticism, W. K. Wimsatt, Rene Welleck, and M. H. Abrams say, is the pursuit of the harmony and unity between subject and object. But the romantic pursuit of the harmony and unity between subject and object, human and nature, the conscious and the unconscious is differently understood according to the various literary critics. One of them, represented by Wimsatt, Welleck, and Abrams, is the traditional approach to the English romanticism in which has searched for the historical significance of romantic human life presented with 'the sense of individual identity' through the mutual relationship between the spritual and the material, the subjective consciousness and the objective reality.
On the contrary, Georg Lukacs, Christopher Caudwell, and Raymond Williams consider of the English romantic desire of the harmony and unity between subject and object as the romantic ideology of 'the complemetary psychological symbol for the loss of self'. They say that 'the loss of self' is the rationalizing and totalizing subject which was actualized by the process of modernization since 18th century. The romantic ideology, which is the response or product of the industrial revolution, means that the human, the subject who can not product the objective things for the industrial revolution, complemented their active lives for the intrinsic and subjective Nature, Humanity, and Art.
In Wordsworth, Now & Then, Antony Easthope says that the aproaches to Wordsworth should be differentiated from the present and the 19th century, and that we have to escape from the dualism which is consisted of the positive and the negative attitude to the English romanticism or Wordsworth. In the historical approach based on Easthope, I propose the recent narrative theory in order to escape from the dualistic attitude to romanticism in which is divided into the subject and the object, human and nature, history and poet, and politics and literature. With the theory of narrative, which is consisted of three parts (historie, recit, and narration) according to Gerard Genette, we can escape from the dualistic approach to romanticism and Wordsworth in which is divided into the historical fact and the individual emotion, and so on. With the theory of narrative, we can appreciate the harmony and unity between the subject and the others in the lyrical poems of Wordsworth as the enlightenment response to the industrial society, and the poetic narrative of the French revolution presented in The Prelude as the representation of nationalism presented in the narration (narrative method) of Wordsworth.
