Shen Yazhi 沈?之(ca. 770-ca. 830), in his famous Tang 唐(618-907) tale “Feng Yan zhuan” ?燕?(Story of Feng Yan), specifically claims, “I esteem the words of the Grand Historian [Sima Qian] and also am fond of relating events in which justice and righteousness are upheld,” as his motive for writing this knight-errant tale. A study of Tang tales inspired by Sima Qian 司??(145-86 B.C.) reveals the extent to which this old tradition from the Han ? Dynasty (206 B.C.- A.D. 220) was kept in Tang social context, and further, how it influenced narratives after Tang Dynasty.
In this study I demonstrate some significance of the tale of “Feng Yan.” First of all, Shen Yazhi has kept entirely the tradition of knights-errant set up by Sima Qian. Secondly, in presenting a heroine who is not a swordswoman herself involved with a knight-errant, Shen Yazhi presented a prototype of yinfu 淫?(the dissolute woman) for later narratives of knights-errant, most clearly in Shuihu zhuan 水??(The Water Margin). Thirdly, with highly selective scenes in his narrative, Shen Yazhi reveals a subtle social phenomenon in which a vulnerable husband encounters a wife from a powerful family; one must pay special attention to the presentation of qidang 妻?(wife"s related families) in this tale. Finally, and mostly importantly, the unusual circumstances surrounding Feng Yan’s capital crime of
murder were so appreciated by the emperor, the symbol of law, that an amnesty was granted o all criminals sentenced to death in order to save Feng Yan and compromise the orthodoxy with the morality held by the outlaw knight-errant.
