North Korea conducted its first nuclear test three months after its missile test on July 5, 2006. It conducted another missile test on April 5, 2009. Now that North Korea conducted another missile test on April 13, 2012, it will probably try another nuclear test, which would prove its capability to mount its warheads on its missiles. It is high time for South Korea and international society to prepare all options to effectively deal with the North Korean “nuclear missile threat.”
Especially, South Korea needs to look for the close cooperation among its friends and allies in order to deny or punish possible North Korean nuclear attack. It should also focus on reinforcing its military preparedness against the nuclear threat, including preemptive options. Most of all, South Korea should acquire PAC-3 intercepter missile systems in order to protect Seoul and other strategic facilities while pursuing an overall missile defense system.
