The present study purposes to explore the effects of two prewriting tasks (freewriting and clustering) and language media (L1 or L2) on Korean university students’ writing performance in English. Before writing an argumentative essay in L2, the freewriting and clustering group had a prewriting task twice, first in L1 and then in L2. The results of the study reveal that two prewriting tasks were effective in different aspects. Clustering led to better prewriting performance in L2, and also resulted in more idea generation, whereas the ideas written in freewriting were incorporated more in the main writing. But no statistically significant differences in L2 writing quality were revealed between the two tasks. The quality of L2 writing was founded better after L2 prewriting in both task groups; more improvement was noted from the freewriting group. The correlation analysis illustrated relatively positive relations of L1 freewriting with L2 writing and those of L2 clustering with L2 writing. Helpfulness of prewriting was more positively evaluated by the freewriting group; prewriting in L1 was more preferred by both groups. The findings from the study illustrate the positive interventional values of both freewriting and clustering as a prewriting task, with their mixed effects in relation to language medium.
