This paper aims to investigate the changes of narrative text-types and distributions of grade in Korean elementary school textbooks from the 1st educational curriculum to the 7th educational curriculum. Elementary school textbooks contain a number of narrative texts to help young students learn lessons. These narrative texts are of various types and are widespread in elementary school textbooks. I focused on Korean textbooks from the 1st educational curriculum to the 7th educational curriculum.
I researched these texts and sorted them according to periods, grades and types. The trends of selecting narrative texts have affected the ideals of education, grade and the story form. So I divided these texts two ways, one is in broad categories, the other is in small categories. As a result children’s stories and historical people’s narratives have a wide spreaded through times and grades. But allegories were distributed in the first and second grade.
And I noticed that the same stories, or the same materials have been used in the textbooks curriculums. As a result I found narrations of Lee Soonshin 15 times. These duplicated texts or materials formed canonical works. But the principals of selecting and using these materials have changed according to the purpose of Korean language education, ideologies and social atmosphere.
