This study has examined how important it is to recognize and understand the rhyming in translating Chinese classics, and has therefore discussed several important issues such as rhyming characters of homographs with different sOlU1ds, rhyming and rhythmical measures, and rhyming and verse rhythms.
When it comes to translating Chinese classics, there can occur some mistranslations unless full attention is paid to the rhyming generating small or large rhythmical measures. First, even translation of typical verse works structured with couplets of two lines can have errors when the rhymes of homographs with different sounds and therefore different meanings are not caught and analyzed.
Also, some verse works with apparent poetic features can be misclassified as prose works because rhythmical measures are unnoticed and therefore basic contexts are not recognized, leading to mistranslation. And, not attending to changing rhymes which distinguish rhythmical measures can result in wrong interpretation of content units, which can be the causes for incorrect translation or even totally wrong translation.
Further, without accurate understanding of rhymes with rhythmical measures and rhyme changes, the literary works could be wrongly understood and translated, not catching and appreciating the true artistic worth of repetitive rhythmical measures of classic verse.
